The last of the Busso V6 grand tourers. A 2002 Alfa Romeo 166 3.0 V6 24V Sportronic in Nero Metallizzato — one of the final cars to receive Giuseppe Busso's legendary naturally aspirated V6 engine. This is a long-term ownership and restoration journal documenting every aspect of living with, maintaining, and preserving this mechanical masterpiece. From cooling system overhauls to Autobahn cruising, every chapter tells the story of a car that refuses to be forgotten.
ECU Remap & Diagnostics
Professional ECU diagnostic session and mild remap focusing on throttle response and fuel mapping refinement. No power increase targeted — just smoother power delivery and better throttle linearity. The Sportronic gearbox also benefits from revised shift points.
Wheel Restoration
Professional restoration of the original 17" 5-spoke alloy wheels. Stripped, repaired curb damage, repainted in original gunmetal with clear coat. Mounted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires.
Brake System Overhaul
Replaced all brake discs and pads (Brembo discs, Ferodo DS2500 pads for front). Flushed brake fluid with Motul RBF600. Rebuilt rear calipers. The braking feel is now confidence-inspiring and progressive.
Interior Leather Restoration
Full leather conditioning and repair of the driver's seat bolster. Deep cleaning of all interior surfaces. The original Momo leather steering wheel was in excellent condition — just needed proper conditioning.
Exhaust System Upgrade
Installed a custom stainless steel exhaust from the cat-back. The Busso V6's natural voice is now properly unleashed — a deep, cultured rumble at idle that builds into a howl at high RPM. Kept the stock manifolds and cats for emissions compliance.
Suspension Refresh — Front
Replaced front control arm bushings, ball joints, anti-roll bar links, and shock absorbers. Used Koni FSD adjustable dampers for a balance between comfort and handling. The transformation in ride quality is remarkable.
Timing Belt & Variator Service
Full timing belt replacement including tensioners, idler pulleys, and variator chain. This is the most critical maintenance item on the Busso V6. Used Gates Racing belt and OEM Alfa Romeo tensioners. Also replaced cam cover gaskets.
Complete Cooling System Overhaul
Replaced radiator, thermostat, water pump, all coolant hoses, and expansion tank. The original parts showed significant age-related deterioration. Used Silicone hoses for all critical connections. System now maintains perfect temperature even in summer heat.
Acquisition & Initial Assessment
Purchased the 166 3.0 V6 Sportronic with 187,000 km. Full inspection revealed a well-maintained drivetrain but aging cooling system and suspension components. The Busso V6 runs beautifully with characteristic smoothness at idle and strong pull through the rev range.
