The Alfa 33 Imola Barn Find

Discovering a forgotten Italian gem

The Tip

It started with a message on a forum. Someone mentioned an Alfa 33 sitting in a barn "somewhere in Śląsk." Details were vague, but the word "Imola" caught my attention. The 33 Imola is a rare special edition — named after the Italian circuit, equipped with a 1.7 16V engine and distinctive trim.

First Sight

The barn was exactly what you'd imagine — wooden, slightly leaning, filled with hay and forgotten things. And there, under a tarp covered in dust and straw, sat a red Alfa Romeo 33. The Imola badges were still in place. The paint, though faded, showed its original Rosso Alfa.

Opening the door released a wave of nostalgia — old leather, old plastic, the particular smell of an Italian car from the early 1990s. The interior was dusty but complete. The characteristic Imola seats with blue accents were intact.

Assessment

The good news: the body was surprisingly solid. These cars were notorious for rust, but this one had been stored dry. The engine turned freely by hand — no seized pistons, no horrible noises. The bad news: every rubber component, every seal, every fluid needed replacement. Eleven years of sitting had taken its toll on the perishables.

The Decision

I loaded it onto a trailer that afternoon. The previous owner seemed relieved to see it go to someone who understood what it was. As I drove home with the little red Alfa on the trailer behind me, I felt the familiar mix of excitement and trepidation that every restoration project begins with.
